Das berühmte bürgerliche Trauerspiel, an dem Lessing seit 1757 arbeitete, kam 1772 nach seiner Vollendung zur Aufführung. Als Stoffquelle diente ihm die Verginia-Sage: Die junge Frau scheint der gewaltvollen Zudringlichkeit eines Mannes nur dadurch entgehen zu können, dass ihr Vater sie tötet. In ›Emilia Galotti‹ verwirklicht Lessing seine in der ›Hamburgischen Dramaturgie‹ entwickelte Katharsis-Theorie: Nicht ein momentanes Mitfühlen soll beim Zuschauer hervorgerufen werden, sondern die Einsicht in eine höhere Ordnung. Seine Bedeutung erlangt das Stück zudem durch Lessings Wendung zum realistischen Spiel, die insbesondere von den Dramatikern des Naturalismus wieder aufgegriffen wurde.
